Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld

German fashion designer and photographer, born September 10, 1933
Karl is regarded as one of the world's most famous and prominent fashion icons, as well as a symbol of the twenty-first century. He is the first designer for many international brands such as Chanel, HM, Fendi, Dar, Chloe, and other international brands.
Karl grew up in a wealthy family where his father imported condensed milk to Germany while his mother encouraged him to pursue science, culture, and intellectual pursuits. He is not proficient in music, so it is better for him to turn to drawing, and from here he showed great interest in cartoons and the visual arts.

In his adolescence, when he was fourteen, Karl saw that his future was elsewhere and made a bold decision, after obtaining the blessing of his parents, to move to Paris, where he attended a private school. Lagerfeld finished his high school studies at Montaigne High School and wanted to specialise in painting and history.

Two years after his travels, he participated with a collection of his drawings and several textile samples of his designs in a programme of design competitions, in which he won first place in the coat category, jointly with another winner, Saint Laurent, who later became a close friend of Lagerfeld.

Soon after, Karl worked with the well-known French designer Pierre Balmain, first as a junior assistant, then as an apprentice, and although it was hard and stressful work, the young designer continued to work for three years; after that, he moved to work with another fashion house before he took off. for his solo work in 1961.

Lagerfeld worked to head the Chanel fashion house, which was founded by Coco Chanel, for three decades. He is considered the reason and supernatural force behind the revival of the famous Chanel fashion house, and he presented 8 fashion collections annually until he established his own brand that bears his name (Karl Lagerfeld) in 1984, which he founded on the idea of what he described as "intellectual sexiness." Over the years, the brand has earned a reputation for quality tailoring and bold ready-to-wear pieces like brightly coloured bomber jackets. In 2005, Lagerfeld sold his brand to Tommy Hilfiger.

In 2015, the first Karl Lagerfeld store opened in Doha, Qatar.

He is also known for his all-day sunglasses and ponytail, and when asked if he hides behind his sunglasses to avoid being watched!Karl Lagerfeld commented on this by saying:

"I don't want everyone to be able to see my facial expressions, because myopic people have a kind of sad look like a puppy they're hoping to adopt, and you have to take off your glasses for two or three hours so you don't look like that, and that pathetic look is what I don't want." "Really, that's not the impression I want to make, because I'm not like that."

In another statement to the interviewers, Lagerfeld said that he learned more by visiting the Hamburg Kunsthalle Museum frequently than he ever did in school. His biggest inspiration came from artists.

Karl Lagerfeld's most famous quotes include:-

  • The luxury for me is to have plenty of time to take care of yourself without having to live under constant pressure. Today, there are poor people who have no power and others who are under great pressure. Luxury is also a psychological state, as it does not only lie in expensive things, but these exorbitant prices must be justified by very high and impeccable quality.
  • If you do not introduce some modernity into your work by creating fashion, your reputation will fade quickly. You must open your eyes. You can be inspired by everything around you. Your work must have some contemporary flair; otherwise, it is of no importance.
